It is the responsibility of every professional to work with the right tools of the trade and that means not only having the right training and experience, but also that you support yourself and your business with the right administration set up which includes various forms of insurance.

By protecting yourself, you are also protecting your clients and you demonstrate that you take your craft seriously and are serious about providing a quality, professional service.

If you are a business owner, you should have in place various business insurances from professional indemnity to public liability, from equipment, fire and theft to employee insurance.

Whatever type of makeup artist you are, insurance should be the number one item on your makeup artist kit list.  All too often, it is way down on student and practitioners’ priority lists.  And, according to research, over 53% of professional makeup artists don’t carry any form of insurance (public liability, kit, professional indemnity).  Does this ring a bell?

It’s incredible that so many pro makeup artists spend so much money on their tools and products (and we are talking thousands of pounds) and then say they don’t have the money to pay for insurance.

For some, a premium might be a lot of money for something that you might NOT need.  But, insurance is one of those things that until you need to make a claim, you don’t think you are ever going to use it and it seems like an unnecessary expense.

Can you imagine the consequences if you don’t have the right insurance and need to make a claim?

So, are you REALLY sure you don’t need insurance?
Ask yourself the following questions:

-   What would happen if one of your brides had an allergic reaction to a product you use and decides to sue you?

-   How would you be able to work if your kit worth thousands of pounds was lost or stolen? Have you got the cash to replace it in order to carry out the assignment you are booked for at the end of the week?

-   Can you afford to lose cash from a job and what happens if it’s stolen with your handbag and smart phone?

-   Can you cover legal expenses and compensation if one of your celebrity clients slips and trips over your kit bag and injures themselves whilst you are working on them?

-   Are you correctly insured to work the catwalk shows?

-   Is your airbrush equipment and products included in your kit insurance and for the full replacement value?

-   What about legal expenses for a claim made against you for damaging property from that very expensive designer gown to the beautiful antique mirror.  Can you afford to replace them?

-   Are you covered as a student when working weekends freelance (and for free) to gain experience?
